The First Line (est. 1999), a quarterly print literary journal that helps writers jumpstart their creativity, has updated its theme list for 2016 and is now accepting submissions for another “first line” prompt: “‘Unfortunately, there is no mistake,’ she said, closing the file.” Writers must use the first line “as is” and write a fiction story based on it.
Recommended word length for fiction is 300 to 5K words.
This blog features paying calls for fiction submissions, and occasionally non-fiction and poetry. I strive to ensure all submission calls are open to LGBTQIA characters and themes.

This blog is queer-friendly. I strive to ensure that all submission calls I post are open to works with queer/LGBTQIA characters and themes. I do this by checking the publisher's back catalog, submissions policies,or business practices, or by communicating with the publisher directly.
Please contact the publisher through the links in the post if you have questions about a submission call. Contact me if you've had a bad experience with a publisher featured here.
